Margarita Lalor Cavanagh’s spiritual will
There is something I
would like to point out: I love life. And every minute that
passes by it’s a wonderful gift from God.
And in spite of
everything I went through, in spite of the “swings”, the
euphoria, the sad and happy moments; In spite of the “joys and
shadows”, the great joys and sadness, I’m convinced that life is
worth living.
And each day, when I wake
up, I thank God for the life He gave me and allowed me to keep
living.
I am also thankful:
Because I lived long
years of independence, but now I have people to depend on... I
am thankful for my feet, on which I used to dance, walk and run;
Now with my left foot I write, and with my right one I speak on
the phone.
I am thankful because my
sense of humor is intact, and suffering did not make me bitter.
I can still see the funny side of some situations and I can
still laugh from a good joke.

Because I can read everything without wearing glasses.
Because I can see the
wonders of nature, perceive and assimilate ideas, behaviors,
and non-written messages.
Because I can appreciate
a good drawing, even though I don’t draw anymore.
Because I can enjoy
colors, even though I don’t paint anymore.
Because I used to be able
to sing, but now even with a defective voice people
understand me.
Because I can still say
“I love you”, as I used to, and I will always say.
Because my hands still
have the capacity to give…
Because my heart beats
and can deeply love..
Because I still breathe
freely and I don’t need an oxygen mask.
Because I can hear. I can
listen to the secrets of my nephews and nieces, I can listen
to the secret of a friend. I can hear the whispering of the
voices that try not to wake me from a nap. I can hear an
outburst of laughter, the sweet voices of my nieces singing
in the bathroom on a Friday night before going out… the
sound of the waves in the ocean when they break, but above
everything I am thankful for music, any kind or variety; I
wouldn’t live without it.
Because I still wander
everywhere, and I have someone carrying my wheelchair.
Because I can still go
out on the streets, both on nice and ugly days. And because
I’m not lying on a bed of a hospital, suffering from pains,
or cold, or heat or solitude.
Because I live on a cozy and comfortable apartment (as long
as taxes do not raise), always receiving visits from nephews
and nieces at different times. I like that. They are the
“salt” and “pepper” of my life.
Because I can still go to
the country and get on a truck, I can still go over the
cattle ranch and I can still appreciate a good plantation,
I am thankful because:
I can still participate when the cattle is being marked
onduring the cold days of winter.
I can still smell the grass recently cut
and listen to the murmur of the wind over the dry corn husk,
the maize on the verge of harvesting.
Have the feeling it will rain
And hearing birds singing…
I am thankful because I feel like living,
Because I am free, because I am happy
And because the key, and center
and end of human history
Is found in The Lord, My God.
